For many years I have had this fantasy that in the future I will be able to look back and see a timeline of my own life through the lens of my social media. When I look out at my various profiles, I ask myself whether my fantasy has a chance of coming to fruition. The answer to me seems very clear, "no," it does not fulfill that dream.

Each flavor of social media offers something a little different and many times it feels mandatory to function within society. I am forced to have Facebook for the kids to take part in social activities. I need to have Instagram to see and share family photos. I need to have Twitter to keep up to date on news, the list could go on. The thing that these have in common is that most social media targets and benefits others. I end up posting things that I believe other people might like to see or find interesting. It isn't for me, its for you.

Therein lies the big question. Where do I post the things that I want to see 10 or 20 years from now? The answer is... it can be here. A blog where I can share my interests, thoughts, anecdotes, hobbies and whatever else I end up posting. Not for the followers or likes, but for my future self.

The last question is.. why make such a thing public? I could keep a private journal that no one needs to know about. The answer, you might like to follow along; but the truth is, I don't care, it's not for you, it's for me.
